Balsam Forebay and Ely Mountain
A little known lake by an easy trail with sweeping views
Travel east on Highway 168, just a few miles past Shaver Lake, take Ely Mountain Road, and you will find a little lake great for fishing and photography. If you want a bigger adventure, take the Dogwood Trail up to Ely Mountain. It's an easy hiking trail that gradually gains about 700 feet up to the top of Ely Mountain where you'll see magnificant views of Shaver Lake and the Valley. Depending upon the time of year, you may find colorful wildflowers near the lake and along the trail.
