Alabama Hills

Unique rock formations that create stunning contrasts with the backdrop of Mount Whitney and surrounding high Sierra peaks.

Let your camera tell the story of this unique other-worldly place.

The Alabama Hills near Lone Pine is a photographer's paradise. This geological wonder features uniquely shaped rocks that change color with the light, set against the backdrop of Mount Whitney and surrounding peaks. It's an ideal spot for photography at any time of day, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon. Morning light illuminates the Sierras, including Mount Whitney, while late afternoon light gives the rocks a reddish glow.

Photographers also love the Alabama Hills at night. The full moon casts deep shadows, creating an otherworldly appearance, and during the new moon, the star-filled sky shines brightly. With minimal light pollution and clear skies, the eastern slope of the Sierras is perfect for capturing the Milky Way.

The Alabama Hills is located on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada range. There are a number of ways to get there from Fresno; depending upon the time of year, and how leisurely a trip you want to take.

There's plenty of camping available in the area, as well as close by motels. If you want to extend your trip, check out our post on the Eastern Sierras. They are right in the neighborhood of the Alabama Hills.
